A strong opening quarter from Slovak side Kosice was enough to give them a road win over home team BK Loko Trutnov in the EuroLeague Women.
Kosice's victory moves them into 5th position in Group B, ahead of Trutnov, and should grant them a spot in the upcoming play-offs.
It was Kosice's front line of Gwen Slaughter and Hana Jendrichovská who sparked their side in the first period, combining for 13 of Kosice's 25 points. Trutnov struggled in the face of this offensive onslaught. They shot just 4/15 in the first 10 minutes and trailed 25-10 by end of the quarter.
Trutnov's first quarter lapse left them a mountain to climb in the remaining 30 minutes. Kosice were well up to the challenge and maintained a double digit lead throughout the remainder of the game.
Jennifer Smith finished the game with 24 points for Kosice. Slaughter had 15 points and 16 rebounds and Jendrichovská added 17 points.
Zdenek Sýkora, head coach Trutnov:
"We lost the game at the very beginning, in the first minutes of the starting quarter. We were too nervous and couldn't score. We didn't manage to be strict in defence while Košice played with their centers magnificently. We have to get this game out of our minds and forget. There are still two games with Bourges and Valencia and we still have at least a little hope."
Vladimír Karnay, head coach Košice:
"We spent a lot of time to prepare for this extremely important game. We expected Trutnov to be overmotivated and they were. I have to praise all my players. The first quarter especially was an amazing performance by our team. The centers played very effectively. We reached the aim we had and it gives us motivation for the following games."
Jana Stejskalová, Trutnov:
"We didn´t catch the beginning and it was impossible to change the course of game. Košice played hard (especialy the centers) and we commited too many fouls."
Monika Bárenyová, Košice:
"We started the game very well, our defence worked properly and didn't allow our rivals to score."
