The Lietuvos Telekomas players can be satisfied with the result although the game was much tougher than it looks on the score sheet.
Prior to the game there was much ado about the health of the two leaders of of the local team: Katie Douglas and Jurgita Streimikyte-Virbickiene. Both players had caught a cold earlier in the week and could not practice with the team as usual. Nevertheless, both came out on the floor tonight and made the biggest impact on the game.
The score was equal at the starting minutes (2:2, 4:4, 8:8). Jurgita Streimikyte-Virbickiene gave the home team the lead (10:8) which then grew constantly. At the end of the first quarter Lietuvos Telekomas led 24:16.
Lucie Blahuskova fought well for Sopron in the second quarter. She scored 2 points in the 17th minute to cut the deficit to 3 (29:26). 1 and half minutes later Bronislava Borovickova made 3 points (33:30), but Jurgita Streimikyte-Virbickiene answered with 2 and gave Lietuvos a 5 point lead at half time – 35:30.
Streimikyte-Virbickiene and Douglas were the core offensive power for Vilnius in the third quarter. While scoring 16 points, the Lithuanians did well in defense by allowing their Hungarian counterparts to score just 9 points.
The fourth period started with a Lietuvos Telekomas scoring run. They scored 8 points in a row to increase the margin to 17 points (61:44 at 37th minute). The game was done at this moment and the 2000 spectators stood up to thank their team. The ovation reached it’s peak when Douglas made a 3 point shot at the buzzer to increase the local lead to 19 – 69:50.
Algirdas Paulauskas, Head Coach Lietuvos Telekomas:
Our game is still quite chaotic, but the players try to play effectively. Sometimes it looks like they care about the show not the result. Anyway it is a win and I am glad that my players played very well in defense. It’s the second game where we allow just 50 points.
Natalia Hejkova, Head Coach MKB Euroleasing Sopron:
We did not deserve to lose by 19 points since we played better than that. Jurgita Streimikyte-Virbickiene did a lot of harm to our team in this game. It’s a pity that she is not playing for us, as she did in last season’s play offs.
Lucie Blahuskova, MKB Euroleasing Sopron:
It was an equal game for two quarters. Then we started to make mistakes, and the opponents just kept on scoring. This is why we lost.
