In FIBA EuroLeague Women first-placed Gambrinus JME traveled to Sopron to battle MKB Euroleasing. The crowd of 2500 was expecting a spectacular game as the visitors were keen to avenge the game they lost to MKB back in November.
At the start of play it appeared as though the home team could not be stopped. They jumped out to a quick six-point lead with strong play from Lucie Blahuskova under the basket. The game however would not continue so easily for MKB and they saw their lead fizzle away.
With the score tied at 15-15 at the start of the second quarter, both teams came out strong and were both led by physical inside play from the centers. The visitors managed to gain a slight advantage in this quarter with balanced scoring, and were ahead by four points at the half.
MKB saw the wind go out of their sails at the start of the third quarter due to flawless defense by Gambrinus. The visitors capitalized on their great defense and converted steals into easy shots and lay-ups.
Down by ten (49-59) at the start of the fourth period, MKB attempted to rally but were unable to claw their way back. Gambrinus, led by MVP Taj McWilliams (23 pts, 15 rebs), went on to capture the victory 65-81.
Natalia Hejkova, Head Coach Sopron:
"I m very sad, because we lost power in the last quarter. Our bench players were not able to bring anything to the game today. Brno played very well."
Milan Veverka, Sopron:
"We played much better than in Brno in November. We could play today with a lot of players. Especially our defense was almost perfect."
Taj McWilliams (MVP):
"We did a good job in the second half with our defense. Sopron made bad shots in offense, so we could play a lot of fast-breaks too."
