The first EuroLeague Women game of 2005 in Sopron promised an exciting match-up as the home side took on Group A leaders Lietuvos Telekomas Vilnius. 2,500 turned up at the game in anticipation of a close contest and preferably a win, which was exactly what they were treated to.
Lietuvos Telekomas were without injured forward Jurgita Streimikyte, but top scorer Katie Douglas made the trip to Sopron.
It was young forward Zsuzsanna Horváth who was given the task of guarding Douglas, and her and her team did a good job in the opening quarter. Sopron managed to build a small lead, which stretched to double figures (10 points) by halftime.
Vilnius stepped up their defense in the second half and improved their performance. Katie Douglas was her usual self on offense, contributing 31 points for the game, while the Lithuanians got a season high 23 points from the 19 year old Eglé Sulciuté.
But despite Vilnius' best efforts, Sopron maintained a small lead. The home side took a 7-point lead into the final period which they extended to 16 with seven minutes remaining.
An 11-3 run by Vilnius made the score a little more respectable at the buzzer, but Sopron recorded a well deserved victory.
Gordana Kovacevic continued her excellent season for Sopron, top scoring with 23 points.
