Sopron moved to top spot in Group A of the EuroLeague Women tonight with a road win over Gambrinus JME Brno.
Brno, who made it to the final four of last season's competition, were the favourites but Sopron produced an upset victory.
Sopron controlled the contest from the opening minute and displayed some great team basketball in the first period. Although Brno was the home side, they played nervously and trailed 14-20 at the end of the quarter.
Brno fought their way back in the second as Taj McWilliams (19 points and 8 rebounds) began to find her shooting touch.
The game remained close until the 35-minute mark when 3-point shots from Hana Machova and Zuzana Zirkova tied the contest at 60-60.
But in the last 5 minutes it was Sopron guard Gordana Kovacevic who made the difference. The Serb & Montenegrin guard has been on fire in her last 2 contests, hitting 19/31 shots and averaging 24 ppg.
She was unstoppable again tonight down the stretch and guided Sopron to a great win. Kovacevic finished with 26 points (11/19 from the field) while Czech national team forward Lucie Blahuskova added 15.
