GAME REPORTThis evening RBC Verviers-Pepinster hosted top ranked Iscar Strauss in Group B action of the FIBA Europe League. Last-placed Pepinster was hoping to come out on top in what was their last home game, but were under-manned as three of their top players were injured.
The home team got off to a good start by making use of different rotations on the court. Towards the end of the first quarter, Iscar Strauss had clawed their way back and took a two-point lead into the second quarter. The match remained tight throughout the second period as Pepinster's big men were strong inside on the offensive boards. At the break the home team found themselves narrowly up 45-44.
Unfortunately for Pepinster, their third-quarter jinx showed up again. They struggled offensively as Iscar Strauss, with the duo of Barak Peleg and Erez Markovich, was unstoppable in the paint. Being outscored by 13 Pepinster faced a daunting 12-point deficit going into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter was marked by relentless hustle from the home team. The Israeli team thinking that they could easily close out the game in the final quarter was startled to find that Pepinster would not give in. After a few long-distance shots, the home team had cut the lead to a single point with 13 seconds remaining. An untimely turnover cost Pepinster the game though, as Adrian Pledger converted the lay-up to give the visitors an 84-87 win. |

COACH QUOTESA. Ashkenazi, Coach of Iscar Strauss:
“It was an important game for us. With injured players Pepinster fought till the last minute to give their fans an exciting game. We were playing without our main point guard but I’m sastisfied with our backup.”
Eddy Casteels, Coach of RBC Verviers-Pepinster:
“It has been a positive game for us with our 2 new players, but without three injured ones (Gerben Van Dorpe, Douthit, and Nathan Hervelle). I can’t wait seeing this group with all the players and a few more weeks of work. It will be interesting to see if they can gel as a unit.” |
