Dorsten had a huge victory tonight over Zagreb. After having looked like the secure winner Dorsten almost gave the game out of their hands in the last quarter when Zagreb had a surprising comeback. Nevertheless at the end the Germans moved up to 5-1 wins and qualified for the second round.
|21 points and Game-MVP: Svetlana Martynova (BG Dorsten)|
For three quarters it seemed as if Croatia could never get closer then ten points but then in the last quarter Dorsten made too much mistakes ion defence-hand and suddenly Zagreb was hard on their heels. Especially Dea Klein- Sumanovac got more and more into the game and scored amazing 31 points.
The last few minutes were very exciting. At the score of 74:72 and 1:23 minutes to play, Jasenka Marohnic made a two-pointer even though she was fouled. After hitting the following free throw her team suddenly was leading with one point. Now Dorsten’s Mirka Jarchovska answered with 4 points in a row but on the other side Zagreb’ Klein- Sumanovac sunk a giant three-point shoot.
16 seconds to go – score 78-75 - Klein-Sumanovac was fouled behind the three-point line and scored easily all three frees-hots. Now it seemed as Zagreb reached their goal – going into over-time. Defending very well, their hosts had to take the last shot behind the arc in person of Isabelle Grenier. At this moment everyone in the gym caught the breath – to cheer some seconds later after the ball felt through the ring. Zagreb’s desperate last shot did not hit the basket anymore and Dorsten won 81:78.
Now the German team is looking forward to which teams they will face up in the next round.
