NIS Vojvodina got their second win of the FIBA Europe League this evening after a thrilling encounter against Maroussi Telestet.
Hungarian guard Istvan Nemeth was the hero on the night for the Serb and Montenegrin club, as his 2 clutch free throws with just one second on the clock, sealed a 72:71 victory for Vojvodina.
In fact, Vojvodina only arrived in Athens 3 hours before tip-off, a fact which did not seem to effect their performance on the night. They led for almost the entire contest mainly thanks to their solid defensive play.
Nonetheless, Maroussi had a shout at winning the game, which they nearly did after Oliver Popovic hit a 3-pointer with 8 seconds on the clock, to give his side a 1-point lead, 71:70.
Before Maroussi had a chance to celebrate, Nemeth found himself on the free throw line with a chance to win the game. Although he missed both of his previous attempts, he dug deep and nailed both shots.
Vojvodina star Milan Gurovic had an off night, as his shooting touch seemed to desert him (14 points on 2/8 3-pointers and 2/6 free throws). Bench player Predrag Suput stepped up in his place to score 23 points, while Nenad Canak added 17.
Forward Georgios Karagkoutis was the top scorer for Maroussi with 18 points.
Game MVP: Predrag Suput
Nikola Lazic, Head Coach of Vojvodina:
“We had a bad percentage in free throws and grabbed less rebounds, but we managed to win due to our great defense”
Istvan Nemeth, Vojvodina:
“It was a difficult situation for me to make the last two free throws, because I hadn’t had scored any points in the second half and just few minutes before I had missed two free throws. But I tried to relax and concentrate and I made it”.
Panagiotis Giannakis, Head Coach of Maroussi:
“We made too many turnovers (24) because we were nervous. Despite our bad performance we had a chance to win the game. We have to take a lesson from this kind of loss. The season is long and we have to be patient”.
Georgios Karagkoutis, Maroussi:
"When a game comes to the last free throw or the last shot, the winner is decided by the details. This was our worst game so far”
