Dynamo Moscow got a great victory (84:82) at Telestet Maroussi Athens this evening. The key to the Russians’ victory was their zone defense, played in the second half, which caused huge problems for Maroussi.
Four consecutive three pointers (two by Ekonomou and two from Jefferson) helped Dynamo to surprise Maroussi and take a 9-point lead (72:81) in a crucial moment of the game (38’). The home team managed to pull back to 82:83 thanks to their aggressive full-court-press defense. But after being fouled, Dynamo's Mrsic was cool enough to make at least the second of his two free throws. The last shot of the game was up to Blackney, but his three point attempt hit the rim.
This was Dynamo’s third victory and as a result they have a great chance to stay in front in this group. On the other hand, this was the third loss in a row for Maroussi in the FEL, although they remain unbeaten in the Greek League (5-0).
MVP: Julius Jefferson
Dimitri Sakulin, coach of Dynamo Moskow:
“We are glad about this victory, because three days ago we lost an important game in the Russian League. Furthermore we lost our coach Valdemaras Khomichus , so this game wasn’t easy to win against this great team.”
Nikos Ekonomoy, Dynamo Moskow:
“I’m very happy, because I see some familiar faces. It felt a bit awkward for me to play against a Greek team, but we needed this victory very much. It was a great victory, because we have beaten Maroussi, which are still number one in the Greek League.”
Panagiotis Giannakis, coach of Telestet Maroussi:
“Unfortunately we could not bring up any concentration and energy after our victory in the domestic league. Actually we were very confident, but with 24 turnovers it’s impossible to win. We will try to improve our game to a high European level and to become more consistent.”
Giorgos Karagoutis, Telestet Maroussi:
“Once more we showed a different effort in the Greek League and in the FEL. The three losses are too much for our aims in the FEL.”
