After having lost once in the FIBA Europe League and twice in the Polish League, Polonia Warbud got just what the doctor ordered tonight against Hapoel Tel Aviv in Warsaw, a victory.
Lithuanian guard Rolandas Jarutis was the MVP of the game and the home team star, as his 10 points in the 4th quarter sparked Polonia towards their first win of the season.
The Israeli team took their momentum into the second half, and with 6 minutes to go in the game, they had increased the margin to 9 points, 64:55.
A key 3-pointer from forward Jeff Nordgaard provided the lift that Polonia needed and it was time for Jarutis to perform his game saving heroics. The Lithuanian guard hit from downtown in the 37th minute, to give his team the lead for good.
Jarutis finished the game with 16 points for Polonia. Nordgaard added 25 on a sizzling 9/11 shooting.
Michael Wright top scored for Tel Aviv with 17 points, while Matan Naor had 16.
Game MVP: Rolandas Jarutis
Wojciech Kaminski, Head Coach, Polonia:
“I am very happy about this victory. We needed to win this game so much! We played good defense, but in most actions we couldn’t make any points. It was a very tough game for us, but we won in the last minutes. This means that my team has a great character!
Rolandas Jarutis, Polonia:
“I’m very happy that we finally won the game! We had too much pressure on ourselves, because we lost the last three games in the Polish league and in FIBA EUROPEAN LEAGUE… In training we played much better than during the games, but tonight we finally won!”
Erez Edlshtain, Head Coach, Hapoel:
“This was our first game on the road. We lost a couple of moments in this game, especially in the last five minutes. During this time I had to give Matan Naor one minute rest because he was playing with four fouls, but after his coming back to the court he couldn’t help his teammates to win the game.”
Naor Matan, Hapoel:
“I don’t have much to add to what the coach said. We shouldn’t lose this game in the last minutes, but we did! I cannot explain that!”
