GAME REPORT

25.11.2003
BC Kyiv 110 GHP Bamberg 71

BC Kyiv killed their German opponents from Bamberg in today’s FIBA League Europe 110-71. It was the first time that the Germans lost with such a large margin, and only their second overall defeat in the competition. With this victory Kyiv was able to close up to Bamberg and they are now only one game behind, ranked fourth in group D.

Both teams started nervously and it took almost two minutes until Steve Goodrich opened the game with a 2-pointer. Bamberg wasn’t able to stop the Ukrainian sharp-shooters, especially Andriy Lebedev (26 points) who was 5 of 7 from three-point-range. Bamberg’s Head Coach Dirk Bauermann tried everything to disrupt the Kyiv offense but even a time-out could not prevent his team losing the first period 8-30.

For several minutes it looked like Bamberg could get back into the ball game as Kyiv missed some easy baskets and Latvian Uvis Helmanis started to hit his shots. But Jason Sasser comitted 2 fouls in only 15 seconds. After Steffen Hamann was forced to the bench minutes later with five fouls, Bamberg’s comeback was over. After 30 minutes Kyiv had a reassuring 35-point-lead (85-50).

This was the big chance for Ukrainian youngsters to get some minutes on the European stage. 18 year old Artem Shvets for example made his first apperance in the FIBA Europe League. Bamberg had already given up long ago and for this reason Kyiv kept their large lead even with only bench players on the field until the end.
