GAME REPORTA strong first quarter from Polish champions Anwil Wloclawek saw them through to a 78:70 win over KK Hemofarm Vrsac. The victory gave Anwil sole control over Group B, which they lead with a 5-2 record.
Anwil’s 1st quarter stretch was keyed by strong defense and they held the Serb and Montenegrin visitors to just 10 points in 10 minutes. Vrsac had trouble with their interior defense, which Anwil center Sharone Wright (211 cm) used to his advantage. He had 8 points and 6 rebounds in the first half.
Vladimir Tica was the only Vrsac player who had an answer to Anwil’s front line and he scored 10 first half points to go along with 6 rebounds.
Vrsac proved to be more of a threat after the halftime break. They won the 3rd quarter, 18:26 and with 8 minutes to go in the 4th, pulled to within 3, 58:55.
It was at this moment that Anwil, perhaps shaken by the comeback, narrowed their focus and knuckled down on defense. Several steals resulted in fast break buckets and the home side regained control, holding on for the 78:70 win.
Wright was named MVP of the contest and finished with 17 points and 8 rebounds.
Vrsac guard Nebojsa Bogavac scored a game high 22 points.

COACH QUOTES
Andriej Urlep, Head Coach Anwil:
"We played a good game, especially in the first quarter. We didn’t manage to enlarge the distance and I knew, that Hemofarm could play much better than they did in the first period. So I warned my players during the break, that this game isn’t over yet. Unfortunately we didn’t play very well in the second half. Maybe it was the injury of Zavackas which caused the problems. But thanks to the first qurater we won the game. I want to congratulate Hemofarm for the good game."
Janis Blums, Anwil:
"We started the game with a very good defense, but during the second half we played slower and slower. That’s why Hemofarm could narrow the gap. At the end we succeeded because of the easy points after several steals. Finally we won a very important game."
Dusan Gvozdic, Assistant Coach Hemofarm:
"I want to congratulate Anwil for the good game they played today. We started the game without any concentration. We just scored 10 points in the first quarter that’s why we lost. Good luck to Anwil in their next games."
Nebojsa Bogavac, Hemofarm:
"Our lack of concentration in the first half was the reason why we lost this game. In the third quarter we were very close, but in the end we made too many mistakes." |
