GAME REPORT

Lietuvos Telekomas 80 Gambrinus JME 82

The team from Vilnius started with a lot of confidence. Having won there first two Euroleague matches Lietuvos Telekomas thought about nothing other than victory.

Brno, however, had something else in mind, having never lost to Lietuvos Telekomas before in 4 meetings.

The home team had the better start. A three-pointer from Olga Murashkina and field goal by Jurgita Streimikyte-Virbickiene gave it a 5:0 lead in the opening minute of the game. The quarter continued in the same vein and Vilnius won in 23:18.

The answer by Brno was quick. They powered up their game, not letting the opponents score for almost 4 minutes and took the lead.

Lietuvos Telekomas had to do something and Ukrainian Olena Zherzherunova scored 5 points in a row and gave the lead back to Vilnius (31:27). But the end of the quarter belonged to the visitors and both teams went to the dressing rooms with a 1 point difference in favor of the Czechs.

The third quarter was the key in Jan Bobrovsky’s tactical plan. He benched his two leaders Hana Machova and Rankica Sarenac for the whole quarter. The others on the roster did a big job in defense resulting in the Lietuvos Telekomas scoring just 9 points to a mere 8 points from Brno.

The hard game in third quarter tired out the players of both teams and now Bobrovsky brought his “scoring machines” back into the game. Hana Machova was simply unstoppable and made a couple of big shots. But the home team also found its scoring touch. The fourth quarter wasn't enough for the teams. After the regular time the score was 70:70.

It looked like Lietuvos Telekomas could win this game in overtime. After two minutes they led by 6 points. But then team leader Jurgita Streimikyte-Virbickiene and both playmakers Rima Valentiene and Diliara Velishaeva fouled out. From this point on the Czechs took the game and never looked back.

Streimikyte-Virbickiene was the top player for the home team, topping them in points (20), rebounds (8) and assists (5).

Machova had 17 points for Brno to go along with 4 steals and 3 blocks in just 18 minutes of action.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Lietuvos Telekomas - Gambrinus JME

Jan Bobrovsky, Head Coach, Gambrinus JME:

"The game start was nervous for both teams. We were afraid of their snipers and quick counterattacks. “Lietuvos Telekomas” had a narrow advantage but our strong defense made the difference."

Hana Machova, Gambrinus JME:

"We were very good on defense and gave our opponents  a lot of diffculties to deal with in the second half of the game."

Algirdas Paulauskas, Head Coach, Lietuvas Telekomas:

"We could have won this game. The 6 points lead in overtime proves it. But it seems like the girls got afraid of their opportunity to win. All of them played very well, but the psychology played its trick."
