Carichieti and Blex Praha met in their penultimate EuroLeague Women game with just pride on the line. Neither team can make the play-offs, but Carichieti were certainly looking for revenge for their 61:57 loss in Prague.
The game was actually decided in the first quarter, even though it remained close until the end. Blex struggled in the opening period while Carichieti looked to Brazilian center Kelly Santos for their scoring punch.
The opening 10 minutes finished 22:16 in favour of the home team and remarkably, both teams matched each other basket for basket for the next 30 minutes. The second quarter finished 18:18, the third 18:18 and the fourth 15:15.
At an initial glance scores can sometimes be misleading and it was not the case that Carichieti preserved their 6-point lead from the first quarter all the way through the game. In the 4th period Blex Praha actually took the lead at 63:65 thanks to a 3-pointer from Marketa Mokrosova.
Carichieti tied the score at 65 and then again at 67, before breaking away. With 21 seconds to go, Santos scored her 19th and 20th points of the game and with 5 seconds Pat Marcello hit 1/2 free throws to decide the game.
Angela Zampella added a 3-pointer at the final buzzer to give Carichieti their 6-point margin of victory.
As well as 20 points and 11 rebounds from Santos, Carichieti got an outstanding game from Bridget Pettis who contributed 26 points and 11 rebounds.
Ivana Voracková scored 19 points for Praha.
