Russia accomplished their mission of limiting the contributions of Ann Wauters and as a result recorded their second victory in as many days by beating Belgium on Sunday.

Less than 24 hours after their impressive win over the Ukraine, Russia returned for their third Group B encounter and again played like the side that many are counting on to capture the title after a near miss in France two years ago.

Wauters, twice voted Europe's top player, dominated in Saturday's win over Hungary to even Belgium's record at a victory and a defeat but one day later she was just one of 10 from the field and scored only four points.

Russia kept their noses in front in the first quarter, extending a four-point lead to 10 (37-27) at half-time.

With Wauters struggling against the Russian defending down low, mounting a fightback proved to be beyond them.

Russia coach Vadim Kapranov gave his seal of approval.

"We prepared very well for this game having studied the Belgians' game over the past couple of days and we were able to work against it," he said.

"We controlled Belgium and especially Ann Wauters, which was very important. Today our defence was much improved and we hope to continue as such."

Centre Irina Ossipova led the way for Russia with 17 points and seven rebounds while point guard Anna Arkhipova had 16 points. She was a scintillating four off five from behind the three-point arc.

Elena Baranova, incredibly strong against the Ukraine, again had a big contribution with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Belgium have their work cut out for them if they are going to survive the group stage and make it to the last eight.

"Unfortunately Ann Wauters did not come into her game today," said Belgium coachh Benny Mertens. "But hopefully on Tuesday she will play better as our target is now the quarter-finals."
The Belgians take on Slovakia on Tuesday while Russia face Hungary.
