Game Report: Russia - Spain


The last quarter-final of Eurobasket 2001 started with very low scoring due to solid defense at both ends of the court. The teams could produce only 2 points each as the 6th minute passed. Then, two consecutive three-pointers from Morgunov and backdoor games helped Russia lead at the quarter, 13-7.

In the second period, Spanish offense totally changed with reserve Kornegay for Gasol. His challenge against Russian athletic players in the paint brought Spain a short dominance in the game however, another reserve, Bachminov led the first half with 9 points where his extra addition carried Russia to a 5-point lead (28-23) at the end of the first half. Both teams' field goals percentage was around 30%, but 1/7 three-point performance from Spain explained the slight difference. Gasol of Spain had only 2 points.

Spain introduced A. Reyes back in the game where Gasol and Navarro were still quiet. Russia looking for transition points had many turnovers. When the 3rd quarter ended none of the teams was looking favorite for the game: 43-43.

Angulo's two crucial steals finished by fast-break points gave Spain a five point lead about to be entered to the last minute. Despite to 1/16 three points percentage Spain played the crunch time better than Russia by hitting the last 7 shots and won the game by 7, 62-55. Spain will play against Yugoslavia in the semi-final on Saturday.
