GAME REPORT

05.09.2003
Spain 99 Sweden 52

Spain put on a show against a helpless Swedish team, winning their opening game of the Eurobasket 2003 tournament. Spain won by a margin of 47 points, 99 to 52, by far the biggest victory in the tournament so far. Sweden managed to stay close in the first quarter, which ended with Spain on top 19–14. In the second quarter Spain outscored Sweden 25–10 for a halftime lead of 44–24, and in the second half Spain never gave Sweden a chance to
get back in the game.

Spanish star center Pau Gasol of the Memphis Grizzlies had his way with the Swedish big men under the basket, and showed why he is considered one of the favourites to win the MVP-award at the end of the tournament. Gasol scored 25 points, shooting 9 of 12 from the floor and 5 of 7 from the line. He also added 9 rebounds and 3 blocks in a dominating performance. Gasol even felt confident enough in this game to step away from the basket and and knock down 2 3-pointers at the end of the game.

Gasol held Swedish starting center Joakim Blom to 2 points on 0 of 4 shooting. Blom got 2 quick fouls in the beginning of the game and his third as soon as he entered the game in the second quarter. Because of the foul trouble Blom played only 14 minutes in the game.

Spanish guard Roger Grimau was perfect from the floor shooting 5 for 5, 4 of the shots being 3-pointers, and finished with 18 points, 15 of them in the first half. All 12 players on the Spainsh team scored in the game as Spanish coch Moncho Lopez got to use his entire bench in the blowout win.

Sweden's best player was Oluoma Nnamaka who scored 9 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Swedish captain Jonas Larsson scored 15 points, all of them coming on 3-pointers. Christian Maråker, 11 points, had a good first half and gave the Swedish team a lift off the bench when Blom got into foul trouble in the first quarter.

Spain shot 58% from the floor and 81% from the line in the game. Sweden shot 33% from the floor and 60% from the line. Sweden was outrebounded 41 to 20 in the game.
