GAME REPORT

07.09.2003
Lithuania 93 Germany 71

Prior to the game this looked like a tight one, but in reality it was only one team on the court. Lithuania took a great win, they made Dirk Nowitzki look human and they killed the German defence with some deadly 3-pointers. Sarunas Jasikevicius was the floor general.

The clash of the two winners in Norrköping started off with a bang. Feelings were running high when both teams gave a good show. In the beginning, Lithuania had some great difficulties with Dirk Nowitzki. His defender, Mindaugas Zukauskas was called to the bench with three fouls after five minutes. But Lithuania found other measures in the defence and finished the quarter three points ahead.

In quarter two, Germany had problems in defence. Lithuania attacked with good pace in the passes and their shots payed off well. Germany reached team fouls early. Lithuania continued to defend well, the Germans were often left with no alternatives. Nowitzki was under great pressure and did not shoot as well as in the first quarter. Lithuania's three leading men, guards Saulius Stombergas, Sarunas Jasikevicius and Arvydas Macijauaskas controlled the court. Lithuania went from a three point lead to 13 points up.

Germany and its coach Henrik Dettmann had hoped for a change of scene, but instead it was the Lithuanians who stepped up yet another level. Sarunas Jasikevicius filled the roll as the floor general, and did it with honour. The guard from Barcelona entertained the crowd with his surprising and opening passes. His teammates took advantage of the open spaces. Germany got more and more frustrated, and found no solutions. During the ten minutes, Lithuania scored no less than seven 3-pointers, Ramunas Siskauskas made the last one with only one seccond to go. When the quarter was over, Lithuania was 23 points ahead.

Germany tried to get closer at the start of the last quarter, but a couple of new 3-pointers spoiled the German plans. When coach Dettmann realised that the game was over, he decided to rest his best player. His colleague, Antanas Sireika, did the same. This meant that the end of the game was only a question of finishing it off. The first and seccond teams in Norrköping now continue to the next round of the European Championship. Lithuania has showed the world what they can do.
