GAME REPORT

03.09.2001
Game Report: Germany - Greece

Greece more than any other team in the tournament were aware that no game is over until the final buzzer. They proved this in their first game, when a last second buzzer beater gave them victory over Italy. In their game against Germany, Greece came out of the blocks so quickly it seemed that Germany did not know what had hit them. Four 3-pointers from Giorgios Sigalas and an offense orchestrated beautifully by Papaloukas saw Greece take a 15-0 lead, and a 19-point lead at the end of the quarter, 29-10.

Germany woke up slightly in the second quarter and Patrick Femerling cause Greece huge problems inside with his offensive rebounding and low post scoring. However, Greece kept their seemingly iron clad grip on the game and finished the half 47-31 ahead.

The halftime break seemed to be just what Germany needed to gather their thoughts and reapply their game plan, and this time it was their turn to start quickly with a 9-0 run at the start of the third. With Greece's lead cut to 7 points, Germany tried to get closer, and at the end of the third period, they had managed to get within 5 points, 58-53.

Despite having a strong game, German star Dirk Nowitzki had not really stamped his authority on the Greeks. This changed with 8 minutes to go in the fourth period, when he hit two clutch three-pointers to give Germany the lead for the first time in the game at 61-63. Greece were reeling from the German fightback, but were not yet out of the game and a three-pointer from Antonis Fotsis gave Greece the lead again at 66-65. The end of the game turned into a free-throw contest in which Germany proved to have less nerves than Greece. Papaloukas missed 3 of 4 free throws for Greece, effectively ending their chances of winning the game.
