GAME REPORT

Villeneuve d'Ascq are celebrating reaching the Final of EuroCup Women for the first time after overturning a nine-point Semi-Final first-leg deficit to collect a vibrant 72-56 return win against Maccabi Bnot.

As well as having to overhaul the first leg arrears, Villeneuve also shrugged off the absence of the influential Geraldine Robert as they produced one of their best displays of the campaign.

Maccabi wilted under the heat of a rapid-fire start by the French hosts who scored the first eight points of the game and within five minutes, were on level terms in the tie.

Once again the meanest defence in the competition proved its value as Villeneuve restricted Maccabi to just 20 points by half-time.

If the Israeli visitors were hoping they could swing the momentum back in their favour after re-grouping in the locker room, they were to be sorely mistaken.

The interval only galvanised the determination of the home side to push down harder on the accelerator and when Villeneuve outscored their opponents with an 11-2 run midway through the third period, the dreams of Maccabi began to fade.

As Villeneuve grew even stronger in the final quarter, there was a party atmosphere for the home fans who revelled in their team's performance.

While there was a nervous last minute as Maccabi wagged their tails to make it a one-shot game in the tie, it proved to be too little, too late as the locals triumphantly celebrated a historic evening.

Megan Mahoney took most of the plaudits with 20 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Ann Wauters used her experience to garner 16 points and eight boards.

Shay Doron led with 16 points in defeat, but Maccabi were left ruing a miserable night from the perimeter.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Entente Sportive B. Villeneuve d’Ascq Lille Metropole vs. Maccabi Bnot Ashdod

Eliyahu Rabi, Maccabi Head Coach
"We knew before the game that it was going to be hard. From the beginning, Villeneuve d'Ascq started strong. We tried to come back and were not too far from the nine points, but we did not succeed. Villeneuve d'Ascq was stronger than us tonight."

Frederic Dusart, Villeneuve d'Ascq Head Coach
"I am very proud to offer this to the players. I wanted to prove to them that tonight was going to be different. Then, it was hard to keep the lead above ten points and it is in those moments we understand our recruitment of experienced players."
