Serbia needed some time but eventually pulled away from Russia for a 79-53 victory to open their Group D play at the U18 European Championship.
Four players scored in double figures for Serbia with Danilo Ostojic and Stefan Lazarevic pacing the team with 13 points each. Russia wasted a 15-point showing by Ilia Karpenkov.
Turning point: Serbia controlled the game but Russia were close until Ostojic scored nine points in a 17-6 run in the third quarter to give the Serbs a 59-40 lead. And Russia were never close after that.
Game Hero: Lazarevic. Besides his 13 points, the Serbian captain added nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.
Stats Don't Lie: Serbia shot 51 percent for the game and made 21 of 24 free throws (88 percent) compared to 29 percent from the field and 9 of 15 free throws (60 percent) for Russia. Serbia also dished out 21 assists compared to six for the Russians.
