27 July 2012

Denmark edged a close encounter with their Nordic rivals Finland and Lithuania beat Ukraine in overtime on Day Two of the U18 European Championship Women Division B in Strumica.

Germany and Bulgaria were the other two winners on Thursday.

The Danes, making their debut in the tournament, trailed by a point in the fourth quarter when Anemone Scheel drilled a jump shot to take the lead.

Simone Ceccard then scored four straight points for Denmark en route to a 58-54 victory.

Scheel's jumper put Denmark in front, 47-46, with 5:55 to go and Ceccardi, who had a team-high 12 points, followed with a jump shot and two free-throws.

The Finns only managed to reduce the deficit to four points.

Kaisa Kuisma poured in 14 points for Finland, who dropped to 1-1 in Group B.

In Group D, Lithuania missed a couple of free-throws with four seconds left in regulation that would have clinched victory but still won against Ukraine, 64-59.

Ukraine led 56-54 in the extra period but didn't hold on.

Lithuania got their noses in front at 57-56 after two free-throws by Justina Kraujunaite.

A basket by Elzbieta Ceponyte took the advantage to three and Austeja Sirsinaityte, whose missed free-throws allowed the game to go to overtime, followed with a three-point play for a 62-56 Lithuania lead and they held.

Also in Group B, Bulgaria romped to an 81-29 triumph over Switzerland.

After racing into a 20-9 at the end of the first quarter, Bulgaria went to the changing rooms on top, 40-23.

They outscored the Swiss 41-6 in the second half.

Kalina Aksentieva and Iva Kostova poured in 15 points apiece for Bulgaria and Borislava Hristova, who led Bulgaria to promotion in the U16 European Championship earlier this month, had 12 points.

Germany were runaway winners in their Group D game against Montenegro.

Marie Gülich and Elisabeth Dzirma each poured in 14 points as Germany rolled to a 71-47 victory.

The Germans trailed 16-15 with 6:26 to go in the second quarter when Levke Brodersen scored to spark an 8-0.

That spurt put Patrick Bär's side in front to stay.

Germany improved to 2-0 and Montenegro fell to 0-2.
