Romania took the lead for good with seven minutes to go after an amazing comeback and defeated Russia, 52-50, in the first game for both teams at the Global Vision U18 European Championship Women.
Russia controlled most of the second half and led by five points in the beginning of the fourth quarter.
Then Sonia Ursu and Oana Baluta fueled an incredible 11-0 run that put the game in the hands of the host team.
Ursu scored six points during the run and assisted Baluta for a three point attempt that went in and drove the Romanian fans crazy.
Russia come back the only thing they did was to get as close as one possession game, two times, despite all the effort of Ksenia Tikhonenko, who finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Sonia Ursu had an impressive performance for Romania with 20 points, eight rebounds, eight steals, three assists and one block.
She got much help from Oana Baluta, who posted a double-double, 10 points and 10 rebounds and also distributed three assists.
No other Romanian player got double-digit scoring, but the hosts were receiving some important input from Hanna Demeter, who finished with 8 points and three rebounds.
Romania shot the ball better from inside and had a better percentage at the free throw line and these were the stats that made the difference in the end, with both teams having a terrible day from beyond the arc.
Romania scored only one basket from the three-point line from 11 tries, and Russia did the same, but from 15 tries.
