Spain Pushed Hard By Slovakia

29 July 2010

Spain built a comfortable lead late in the third quarter and never looked back against hosts Slovakia, emerging clear winners 63-53 in U18 European Championship Women 2010, in Poprad.  Laura Gil scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds for the winners.

The Spain team managed to extend their 11-8 lead against the hosts at the end of the first quarter after Marino Delgado hit a difficult mid-range jumper at the buzzer.

Sabina Orszova drove inside and scored a layup plus foul to inspire a 7-0 run for Slovakia which put them ahead 11-15 before  Mariona Ortiz dished to Laura Gil for a tying jumper at 23-23  with 2:22 remaining in the second quarter.

Turnovers prevented both teams to gain any significant advantage, but Inmaculada Zanoguera stepped up with a big three-pointer and two free throws by Andrea Vilaró in the very last minute of the first half sent Spain to the locker rooms with a 30-25 advantage.

It took more then three minute for Slovakia to open their account  in the second half, but Spain struggled on the offensive end too, scoring only five points in first seven minutes. Still they managed to extent their lead to 11 points after Yurena Diaz drilled a triple with two 1:32 to go in the third quarter.

Gil made a jumper while Queralt Casas and Ortiz  added a basket each to give their team some confidence with a 53-40 lead, with 3:11 on the clock. Behind the loud support of the crowd in Poprad Arena the hosts tried hard to close the gap but it was not to be.
