Spain Hang On Against Russia For Sixth Straight Win

Russia's later surge against defending champions Spain fell short Wednesday as the Iberian side won 54-47 to capture first place in Qualifying Round Group E of the U18 European Championship Women 2010 in Slovakia.

Russia trailed for most of the game and fell behind by 15 points after three quarters. They mounted a huge comeback and managed to reduce the deficit to only five points in the middle of fourth quarter, but it proved to be too little, too late as the Spaniards hung on for victory.

Spain was out of tune in the fourth quarter when they scored only five points,

Laura Gil had another great performance for the winners with 12 points and seven rebounds while Queralt Casas fueled the Spanish offense with eight assists.

Ekaterina Fedorenkova scored 13 points for Russia.
