Spain In Cruise Control Against Baric-Less Slovenia
Spain recorded their fifth straight win in U18 European Championship Women 2010 tournament by blowing away a Baric-less Slovenia 63-31 in Poprad.
Slovenia's main weapon Nika Baric was injured in the overtime win against Slovakia on Monday and remains questionable for the rest of Slovenia's tournament campaign.
Spain used all the players in their rotation and all of them scored at least a basket. Laura Gil and Mariona Ortiz led the winning side with 8 points each.
In the absence of Baric Slovenia found the going tough and they were already trailing in double digits early in the first quarter which ended with Spain in front 20-2. The Spaniards dominated the boards with 14 rebounds including eight on the offensive side.
The second quarter saw continued poor ball distribution and a horrid shot selection from the Slovenians while Spain remained in control and led 31-15 at halftime. Without Tjasa Gortnar in the paint Gil felt comfortable inside collecting 11 rebounds before the break.
Bojana Adamovic tried hard to fill Baric's shoes with 10 points, but Spain's active defense forced her to commit 10 turnovers. The mistakes continued to hurt Slovenia as Spain collected many points in fast breaks off Slovenia turnovers.
