GAME REPORT

France Shut Down Russia, Reach Semis

France's defense limited Russia to only three assists and a score under 40 points to earn Les Bleues a 51-38 win and a place in the semi-finals of the U18 European Championship Women 2010 in Slovakia.

France played good defense on the Russia guards and forced them into eight turnovers during the first ten minutes.

Russia entered the second quarter with Efimova on the bench, but that move did not exactly pay off and France extended the gap to 20-12 after Lucie Barba hit a fadeaway jumper off her own offensive rebound. Coach Olga Shuneykina brought Efimova back on the court and Russia cut the deficit to 17-20. But that was short-lived as Russia couldn't find ways to slow down France's backcourt and especially Akmouche who scored the last four points for Les Bleues in the first half to help her team pull away 26-19.

France continued to use penetrations to hurt Russia in the third quarter and boxed out Efimova on the defense, but Russia managed to hang on until Efimova was withdrawn with an injury and was sidelined for the rest of the game.

Mélanie Devaux connected from downtown for her first three points in the game and gave France a confident 15 points lead after three minutes played in the fourth quarter and it was also she who made the game's last three points from the foul line.

Hélèna Akmouche scored 12 points and Florine Basque added 11 for France.

Svetlana Efimova and Alexandra Stolyar led Russia with eight points each.
