Latvia Clinch U18 Division B Title


Latvia's women are in Beijing, China, playing at the Olympics for the first time.

Don't be surprised if they becoming regulars in the competition, especially when considering the success of the country's youth teams like the under-18s this summer in Skopje, FYR Macedonia.

On Friday night, Sabine Niedola scored 25 points and pulled down 15 rebounds as the Baltic country defeated Belgium 96-64 to win the title at the U18 European Championship for Women Division B.

The Latvians stretched a 21-16 lead at the end of the opening quarter to 44-27 by half-time.

Martins Zibarts' team stormed to a big win, with Anete Steinberg pouring in 16 points, and Arta Strupovica and Liene Priede contributing 11 apiece.

The Belgians got 19 points in defeat from Noemie Mayombo.

The low countries team missed out on title glory, but they did accomplish their main aim of winning promotion to Division A.

In the battle for third place, Slovenia defeated Greece 80-66.

Ines Kerin and Teja Oblak each had 20 points for the victors.
