Lithuania Open With Win Against Greece
// 21 July 2006

Lithuania beat Greece in what was a nervy encounter on day one of the Umcor European Championship U18 Women in Tenerife.

In a game marred by poor shooting from both teams, Lithuania's superiority under the basket proved to be the difference.

Lithuania outrebounded their opponents 59-36 and 19 of their rebounds came at the offensive end. Lithuanian center Gintare Petronyte was particularly effective, grabbing a game high 17 boards, while shooting guard Agneta Morkunaite had 10.

The key to the game proved to be the second quarter.

Lithuania ended the first period up 14-8, but were able to extend that lead considerably in the second.

Greece failed to connect on 10 straight shots and took 6 minutes to register their first basket. By that time Lithuania led 22-9 and had the game well under control.

Greece briefly threatened to come back in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 4 points on two separate occasions, but were outscored 17-12 in the fourth as Lithuania rolled to a comfortable victory.

Petronyte added 13 points and 3 blocks to her 17 rebounds, while Vitalija Vasciunaite top scored with 14 points.
