Emir (Muki) Mutapcic has been named as the new head coach of the senior German national team, the basketball federation of the country (DBB) confirmed on Thursday.

The 54-year-old Bosnian tactician replaces at the helm Frank Menz, who had held the position since January 2012, but will now return to his previous role as coach of the U20 German team.

Mutapcic is an assistant to Svetislav Pesic at Bayern Munich, but the BEKO BBL and the Bavarian club have agreed to allow him a two-month window during the summer in order to work with the national team.

Pesic was the predecessor of Menz at the national team and then succeeded Dirk Bauermann in the Bayern role.

Both Pesic and Bauermann resigned from their position at the national team the moment they took charge of the Munich club, due to Bundesliga regulations.

"Emir Mutapcic has a great reputation in basketball circles and brings a great experience that will benefit our team," commented DBB president Ingo Weiss.

"He has a very good relationship with the players and impressed us with his ideas."

Mutapcic has worked with most of the current crop of German internationals, as he was an assistant to Pesic also during the Serbian's latest spell at the national team, throughout 2012.

He had also coached the U20 German side during three years, from 2005 to 2008, claiming gold at the European Championship Division B with a team that included Tibor Pleiss, Robin Benzing and Elias Harris.

At club level, Mutapcic had previously coached Alba Berlin and Phantoms Braunschweig in the Bundesliga, while during his playing career, he was a member of the legendary Bosna Sarajevo side of the 1980's.

"I feel very honoured that the DBB approached me for this role," Mutapcic said on Thursday.

"The German team has in my opinion a lot of potential and I would very much like to work with that.

"This task will keep me motivated and I'm really looking forward to the first training camp with the squad in early July."

One player that Mutapcic will not be able to include in his squad is Per Günther, who prior to the announcement of the name of the new coach ruled himself out of participation in the EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualifying Round.

The Ulm point guard announced that he would spent the summer recovering from a chronic injury problem in his knee and would consequently not play for the national team this summer.

"We will give him [Mutapcic] all the support we can in his efforts to guide the team to qualification for EuroBasket 2015," Weiss added.

"It's no secret that we wish to have a full-time coach for the senior national team ahead of EuroBasket 2015 and the Olympic Games in 2016, but that will be discussed after the EuroBasket qualifiers."

Both the DBB president and the new Germany head coach thanked the BEKO BBL and Bayern Munich for allowing Mutapcic to take on the role this summer.

"Collaborating harmoniously with the league on the issue of the national team coach is good for German basketball in general," Weiss said.

Germany will go up against Austria, Poland and Luxembourg in Group C of the EuroBasket 2nd Qualifying Round, which gets under way in August.
