Germany on Wednesday announced that Svetislav Pesic has returned to the helm of the national team.

One of the great tacticians in international basketball, the 62-year-old takes over from Dirk Bauermann.

Pesic led the Germans to the EuroBasket 1993 title and later steered Yugoslavia to gold medals at EuroBasket 2001 in Istanbul, and the 2002 FIBA World Championship in Indianapolis.

He has held numerous club coaching positions in his career, including in Germany with Alba Berlin.

"I am very much looking forward to the future challenges with the German national team," Pesic said in a statement released by the Germany Basketball Federation.

"There is a lot to achieve with this team."

Pesic will coach Germany this summer when they attempt to qualify for EuroBasket 2013 in Slovenia.

The team will take on Bulgaria, Azerbaijan, Luxembourg and Sweden in Group A.

The top two sides in each of the four groups and the four best third-place teams will qualify for the Final Round.

It remains to be seen if Dallas Mavericks superstar Dirk Nowitzki, 33, who was recently named 2011 FIBA Europe Player of the Year, makes himself available for national team duty this summer.

Pesic is famous for a lot of triumphs, including in the 1994-95 campaign when he steered Alba to Korac Cup glory with a victory over Olimpia Milano in a two-legged final.

He won four German titles as the coach of Alba.

When he was at the helm of Barcelona in 2003, the Spanish giants won a Copa del Rey, ACB and Euroleague treble.

Most recently, Pesic engineered an incredible turnaround at Valencia Basket in Spain in the 2010-11 campaign.

La Taronja were struggling when Pesic arrived and guided the club into the Quarter-Finals of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague and into the ACB play-offs.

As a player, Pesic won the European Cup with KK Bosna Sarajevo.

Pesic is to be unveiled at a Germany Basketball Federation press conference on March 6 in Berlin.

"I am very happy that we can work together with such a successful and renowned coach," Germany Basketball Federation president Ingo Weiss said.

"He has tremendous experience and is exactly that kind of coach that we were looking for."

Pesic is the mentor of the FIBA Europe Coaching Certificate Program.
