|Luka Pavicevic will remain at the helm of Montenegro for two more years|
Coach Luka Pavicevic will remain at the helm of the senior Montenegrin national team for a further two years, the Basketball Federation of the county (KSCG) announced on Wednesday.
The decision by the executive board of the KSCG means that the 45-year-old Serbian tactician will be in charge of Montenegro in the upcoming EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualification Round next summer and, should the Balkan nation be successful in earning a place, also at the Final Round of the tournament in September 2015.
Pavicevic assumed the role in 2012 and led Montenegro to a perfect 10-0 campaign in the Qualification Round for EuroBasket 2013.
Surprisingly, the Balkan team failed to advance to the Second Round in the big tournament in Slovenia, as they won only two of their five games.
There were however mitigating circumstances.
Montenegro had to make do without star center Nikola Pekovic, who was an NBA free agent at the time and decided not to participate, and to make things worse they were drawn into what proved to be the most ferociously contested First Round group, which included eventual silver medallists Lithuania as well as Serbia, Latvia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and F.Y.R. of Macedonia.
Pavicevic, a point guard during his playing days and a former member of the legendary Jugoplastika (KK Split) side that won three consecutive Euroleague titles under coach Bozidar Maljkovic in the late 1980s and early 1990s, begun his coaching career at OKK Belgrade in 2003.
He took over the U20 national team of Serbia & Montenegro in 2005 and led a side that included the likes of Pekovic, Novica Velickovic, Vladimir Micov, Luka Bogdanovic or Uros Tripkovic to the bronze medal at the European Championship that summer.
His first job outside of Serbia was at the helm of Panionios Athens in 2006 and after one season in Greece he took over at ALBA Berlin, winning one BEKO Bundesliga title during his four-year reign at the German powerhouse.
Pavicevic parted ways with ALBA in 2011 and was handed the reins of French Pro A club Roanne, where he is now into his third season in charge.
The draw for the EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualification Round takes place in Barcelona on 3 February.
