Croatia became the first team from the qualifying round to clinch a spot in EuroBasket 2007 after they defeated Denmark 91-79 and improved to 5-0.
Jasmin Repesa’s men remain the only unbeaten team from qualification round play as they won for the fourth time by double digits.
Croatian basketball fans have to be encouraged with the way their squad has rebounded following their heart-breaking loss to Spain in the EuroBasket 2005 quarter-finals and an eventual seventh-place finish.
Throughout the qualifying round, Croatia has won in convincing fashion, a trend that continued in their victory over Denmark.
Five players scored in double-digits, led by Marko Banic’s 21 points.
Croatia was challenged early by Denmark and took a modest 44-43 lead into halftime.
But Banic and Co took charge with an 18-7 run in the second half.
Croatia went on an 8-2 spurt over the final two minutes of the third quarter in increase their lead to double-digits.
Banic scored three points during the stretch and Marko Popovic made a pair of lay-ups in the final minute to put Croatia up 68-58 going into the final stanza.
Popovic’s individual run continued as he opened the fourth with a jumper as Croatia outscored Denmark 10-5 over the next four minutes.
Popovic, who finished with 17 points, punctuated the run by scoring at the 5:46 mark to give his side a 78-63 lead.
From there, Denmark would get no closer than 10 points.
Croatia will look to make it a perfect 6-0 when they take on Estonia on Saturday.
Denmark conclude again Latvia.
