EUROBASKET WOMEN 2015
|Peter Buckle succeeds Damian Jennings, who will remain with the team as assistant coach|
Australian Peter Buckle has been promoted to the position of Great Britain head coach having served as an assistant at EuroBasket Women 2013.
The play-caller will now effectively swap roles with Damian Jennings for the forthcoming EuroBasket Women 2015 2nd Qualification Round, after Jennings took the team to a ninth-place finish in France last summer.
"I'm very privileged to be named the head coach," said Buckle.
"This is a team that has risen in the world rankings over the last six years, from 76th to 24th and I'm looking to see that rise continue.
"Our first challenge is to make sure we put together six great games, against some very tough opposition in June and qualify for EuroBasket Women 2015.
He continued, "After selecting our squad and holding our training camp in May, we will put together the best team possible."
Buckle was part of his native country's Olympic bronze medal-winning success at London 2012 and has also won three WNBL titles in Australia as an assistant coach with Canberra.
Meanwhile former head coach Jennings, who delivered Great Britain's best-ever EuroBasket Women performance explained, "I withdrew my application believing I would not have enough time to prepare appropriately in the head coach responsibility due to my other commitments.
"I have the energy and capacity for the campaign as an assistant coach, but in reality, I could not do justice to the preparation period leading into the camp with all that is required to be successful, in a most important year.
"However, I am looking forward to working with Peter and the team again."
Buckle will pit his wits against his counterparts from Lithuania, F.Y.R. of Macedonia and Belgium in pursuit of a place at EuroBasket Women 2015.
