Latvia have handed the women's national team reins to TTT Riga coach Aigars Nerips.
The veteran tactician, who will attempt to lead the side into the EuroBasket Women 2013 in France, has been promoted to the top job after serving as an assistant the past several years.
Latvia will compete in Group E in the EuroBasket Women Qualification Round against Italy, Greece, Finland and Luxembourg.
The head coaching position had been vacant since 2nd July, when George Dikeoulakos announced he was not going to continue at the helm.
Dikeoulakos, now the coach of Fenerbahce in Turkey, led Latvia to an eighth-place finish at the EuroBasket Women in Poland.
Nerips knows what exactly what is needed as the coach of Latvia because he worked as an assistant to Ainars Cukste (2006), Ainars Zvirgzdins (2007-2008) and Dikeoulakos (2010-2011).
He served as the head coach of TTT Riga in 2005-06, and then returned to that position in November of 2009.
Nerips has also coached U16, U18 and U20 teams.
He has yet to hear from UMMC Ekaterinburg's Anete Jekabsone if she plans on returning to the national team.
Jekabsone was voted as the 2007 FIBA Europe Women's Player of the Year after leading the team to a fourth-place finish at the EuroBasket Women in Italy.
Nerips will begin his national team duties in May.
