Ilona Korstin's arrival at Spartak Moscow Region could not have been better timed.
The Russia international, who spent the past several years playing for CSKA, joined the three-time EuroLeague Women champions Spartak this summer and last week led the team to victory in the SuperCup Women over Galatasaray.
Spartak's three top players in recent seasons, Lauren Jackson, Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi, were not in uniform for the game so Korstin's presence was vital and she fired the team to a decisive victory.
For her efforts, she was voted as the game's MVP.
Spartak's EuroLeague Women opener is on Wednesday at home against Frisco Sika Brno.
"The season is just beginning, and I very much hope that the fans of basketball and my fans will find the time and effort to attend games," Korstin wrote in her blog on sports.ru.
Korstin says she was saddened by the lack of sponsorship which led to the disbandment of her former club, CSKA Moscow.
"I'm very upset by recent events associated with the army club," Korstin said.
"I'm sorry that the female CSKA ceased to exist. It's the second time sponsors disclaimed the team. It is sad that a club with such a big name did not find support in a difficult moment."
Nevertheless, she is happy with her new situation.
"The team has welcomed me with open arms and besides, I know very well almost all of the players," she said.
"Some of the girls played together already in this team, and some - in CSKA."
In addition to Korstin, Edwige Lawson-Wade and Janel McCarville spent last season with CSKA before joining Spartak.
Korstin has a new passion when she's not playing basketball.
"I have begun to play billiards," she revealed.
"To master Russian pool is not so simple.
"It is a very interesting and complex game with many nuances that I'm trying to understand."
