About this time last year, Anete Jekabsone-Zogota was collecting votes which ultimately landed her with the honor of FIBA Europe Women's Player of the Year.
The Latvia national team superstar is turning in game-winning performances again for Dynamo Moscow in Russia's Superleague and in the EuroCup Women, so it might not be surprising if she netted the award for a second year running.
Her latest heroic effort came on Tuesday when Dynamo came from behind to win at CSKA Moscow, 78-73.
The 25-year-old guard had 11 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter when Dynamo outscored CSKA 28-14.
The setback continued an agonizing stretch of games for CSKA, who had followed up their EuroLeague Women play-off elimination at Halcon Avenida with a defeat to UMMC Ekaterinburg on Saturday.
"We prepared really hard for the match-up with CSKA," Jekabsone-Zogota said.
"On Saturday, we attended CSKA-UMMC game.
"Later, we watched videos, analyzing each player. (Dynamo) Head coach (Natalia) Hejkova stressed defense and we were successful at this. The team defense was excellent."
"In the first half, we relied on our centers Marina Kuzina, Janell Burse and Oksana Zakaluzhnaya.
"The perimeter players joined after the break, starting with Belinda Snell."
CSKA have a team that is loaded with talent, including naturalized Russian Becky Hammon.
"I must admit, it`s really hard to defend Becky Hammon (31 points)," Jekabsone-Zogota said.
"Good shooting, always ready to pass ball. She is reactive, easily switching the direction of her moves. Luckily, we were better in the end."
Dynamo will resume their quest for glory in the EuroCup Women Quarter-Finals when they travel to Serbia for a February 19 clash with ZKK Hemofarm Vrsac.
