A dazzling double-double performance by 22 year old forward Marielle Giroud was very much the highlight for Switzerland as they opened up their bid to reach Division A with a hard fought 66-56 win over Luxembourg in Fribourg.
Having stormed into an early lead at 23-13 after the opening period and then subsequently extending it to 36-17 heading into the break after holding to Luxemburg to just four points in the second quarter, it had looked like the Swiss might run away with the game.
However to their credit, Luxembourg dug deep and never gave up until the final buzzer and really found some offensive rhythm in the second half.
In fact, with just four minutes remaining in the game Luxembourg didn't quite get the nerves jangling but at least gave the home team plenty to ponder as they fought back impressively to narrow to 57-50.
However Switzerland kept their nerve in the closing stages to chalk up a first victory.
Giroud was not surprisingly the MVP after claiming 22 points, 14 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals in a super display. She was well supported by Karen Twehues who shot the ball brilliantly and buried 5 triples on her way to 21 points.
Meanwhile for Luxembourg, Liz Schmitz had 10 points and 5 rebounds while Tessy and Lisy Hetting combined for 24 points.
