Latvia A Tall Test For Hungary

If Hungary thought it was tough against Greece on Sunday when they crashed to a 59-43 defeat in Liepaja, imagine what Monday's game against hosts Latvia will be like.

Laszlo Ratgeber's Hungarians would not have been encouraged by watching the EuroBasket Women hosts annihilate Poland 86-52.

While Latvia scored early and often against Poland, it took Hungary 20 minutes to get rid of their big-game jitters before playing against the Greeks.

By then it was too late.

Hungary trailed 34-12 at half-time and though they played much better after the break, the mountain was too tall to climb.

Latvia, meanwhile, were irrepressible in front of their own fans.

On the evidence of their first win, no one will bet against them reaching the Quarter-Finals.

Last Time Out: The two met at the 1995 EuroBasket Women with Hungary beating Latvia 60-50.

Key Match-Up: Anna Vajda of Hungary v Latvia's Liene Jansone. Vajda is young, but nevertheless a veteran in the Hungary side and needs to be a force over the next two games. Jansone, who is capable of having a big game, will go up against Vajda in the low post.

X-Factor: Petra Ujhelyi is a tall, strong body for Hungary who had just four points and four rebounds against Greece but is capable of so much more.

Stats: Hungary were just one of two at the free-throw line against Greece.

Sounding Off: "We will fight for every centimeter and every ball on the court" - Latvia's Zane Eglite
