GAME REPORT

Turkey Destroy Bosnia To Confirm Finals Ticket

Turkey thrashed Bosnia and Herzegovina 79-50 on Wednesday for their sixth victory in seven games in  qualifying to confirm their ticket to EuroBasket Women 2009 finals in Latvia.

Fenerbahce center Nevriye Yilmaz had 18 points for Turkey, who forced their Group B opponents to commit 27 turnovers.

The best player in that regard for Turkey was Nilay Yigit, who had seven of her team's 18 steals.

Defense has been the name of the game for the Turks this summer and Wednesday was no different.

Leading 18-16 at the end of the first quarter, Turkey held the Bosnians to just 11 points over the next 10 minutes in taking a 45-27 stranglehold on the contest.

The Bosnians managed to reduce the arrears to 45-31 with four straight points after the restart, only for Turkey to then outscore them 12-2 for a 57-33 lead.

Yigit finished with 12 points for the Turks.

Turkey were 19 of 26 at the free throw line compared to Bosnia's nine of 11.

Matea Tavic scored 12 points for Bosnia, who slumped to 1-6.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Turkey vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina

Ceyhun Yıldızoğlu, Turkey coach:

"We had some injured players but changing them with good rotations we managed to win the game against Bosnia. In this game we played a successful defense. Although we had some little problems in offense in general we fought well during the whole game."

Nilay Yiğit, Turkey player:

"Bosnia and Herzegovina has young players. In spite of this fact they did their best and fought for a better score. We started the game aware of our power."

Zoran Nikes, Bosnia and Herzegovina coach:

"It was impossible to win the game with such a low shooting percentage. We had some luck with our three-point shots at the beginning of the game but we did not manage to continue in the same way. We were not mentally ready and we lost the game. Turkey are a very good team and we wish them success in EuroBasket 2009."

Matea Tavic, Bosnia and Herzegovina player:

"Our biggest problems were the turnovers and that we were unsuccessful in defense. The Turkish team played very good and won the game. In my opinion Turkey are the best team in this EuroBasket Women 2009 Qualifying Round."
