Greece took a significant step towards EuroBasket Women 2007 with a 79-71 defeat against Belarus on Wednesday.
The win gives Greece a 3-0 record in Group A with three games still to play.
Belarus were always going to offer Greece a tough challenge and it was only a strong finish which saw the Greeks edge the contest inside the game's final six minutes.
There was everything to play for at the start of the fourth quarter with Greece narrowly ahead, 57-54.
Belarus managed to keep up for four minutes, but a chink of light appeared between the two sides when Afroditi Kosma put back a missed shot by Poly Sarekgou to give Greece a 67-60 lead.
Dimitra Kalentzou then converted a three-point play and Greece were up ten, 70-60.
Belarus battled bravely and Sviatlana Volnaya's hit a three-pointer ín reply. But Greece shut the door on their opponents for good with another 5-0 run thanks to a three-pointer by Ana Kostaki and Sarekgou jump shot.
Evanthia Maltsi underlined her status as Greece's top player with 24 points. Sarekgou added 16 and 8 rebounds for Greece who play Hungary on Saturday.
Belarus take on Bulgaria.
