Slovakia Put Away Ukraine Late

Lucia Lásková keyed a decisive 10-0 run in the fourth quarter with a made jump shot as Slovakia got off to a winning start in the additional qualifying tournament for the EuroBasket Women.

The Slovakians prevailed 66-61 in Kiev, leaving themselves and Sweden with one win in Group C and Ukraine 0-2.

Trailing 51-50 with less than seven minutes remaining, Lásková’s basket gave Slovakia a 51-50 lead.

Zuzana Zirková, who had 22 points to lead the Slovakians, followed with a three-pointer, and then Anna Jurcenkova went up strong for a lay-up.

Bronislava Borovickova capped the burst with another three-pointer - one of eight drilled on the night by the Slovakians – to leave them in command at 60-51 with five minutes remaining.

The closest Ukraine would get would be four points, but that was 65-61 with only 10 seconds remaining.

They fouled Borovickova and she converted one of two at the line for the five-point win.

After the match, Slovakia coach Vladimir Karnay admitted on "The game against Ukraine was a little bit harder than I expected.

"Our players started badly and they were very nervous during the first minutes of this game. I am satisfied with the key players of our team but Bronislava Borovickova played a good game today as well."

The Slovakians were just 19 of 50 (38%) inside the arc but eight of 17 (47.1%) beyond it.

Ukraine, led by Olexandra Gorbunova’s 23 points and nine rebounds, did much of their damage at the free throw line where they sank 20 of 28 (71.4%).

Slovakia will have to improve on their foul shooting because on Saturday, they were an abysmal four of 12 (33.3%).

Next up in the group is a battle between Sweden and Slovakia in Poprad on September 5.
