Norway dug deep in the final period to beat Ireland 72-62 in Saturday's EuroBasket Women Division B qualifying match in Bergen.
Ireland looked to be on course for an opening-day win as they established a 47-44 lead by the end of the third period.
Niamh Dwyer's free throw increased that advantage at the start of the fourth quarter as Ireland, who had trailed by seven midway through the third period, began to look like winners.
But Norway hit back and a 12-0 run saw them establish a 56-48 lead midway through the final quarter - an advantage they never surrendered.
Kristina Tattersdill led all scorers with 15 points for Norway while she also hauled down nine rebounds and handed out two assists in an impressive all-round display.
She was well supported by Nanna Kristine Sand, who poured in 13 points, and Kristine Moll Austgulen, who claimed 12 rebounds to go with her nine points and three assists.
Ireland's leading scorer was point guard Dwyer with 12 points while Lindsay Peat and Marie Bernadette Guiney both contributed 10 points in a losing cause.
