Turkey proved that their impressive run at EuroBasket 2005 was no fluke with a convincing opening win in 2007 qualifying action against Ukraine.
The Turks suprised everybody in 2005, qualifying for the quarter-finals in their first ever appearance in the comeptition.
Ukraine are no slouches themselves, having won the title in 1995. However, they were comprehensively beaten by Turkey in Kiev, 70-59.
The EuroBasket experience has undoubdtedly been a positive one for Turkey. Yasemin Horasan, Esmeral Tungluer and Sebnem Kimyacioglu all participated in the competition and they led the way for Turkey with 20, 19 and 19 points respectively.
Turkey controlled the contest from start to finish.
A 9-2 run in the opening four minutes forced Ukraine into an early timeout, but things would not improve for the home side.
The visitors finished the first quarter leading 23-14 and never looked back. They shot 47% from the field for the game, including 50% from the three-point line, and every Ukrainian attempt to close the gap was repelled.
The lone bright spot for Ukraine was Olena Krykunenko, who finished the game with 26 points and 17 rebounds.
