Hungary: Problems Mount For Ratgeber

07.09.2004

Hungary coach Laszlo Ratgeber is feeling the pressure.

Injuries have crippled the team with a little over 24 hours left before Hungary's tough opening European Championships qualifying match against 2001 champions France in Pecs.

"I can't imagine a harder situation," said Ratgeber.

"We have enough injured players for a complete national team.

"It's really a misery but perhaps these dark signs will give us energy to cause surprises."

Ratgeber's campaign began in difficult circumstances last month when four players - Eva Seres, Timea Beres, Eszter Ujvari and Reka Cserny - refused to join the squad.

The injury crisis worsened at the weekend when Hungary played two successful warm-up games against Slovakia.

Hungary won both games but Annamaria Keller sustained a serious hamstring injury in the second match and has been added to the casualty list.

Playmaker Dalma Ivanyi scored 20 points in the opening 97-69 victory.

The second game was played behind closed doors as both teams exercised new tactics with Hungary winning 81-55.
