At 31 years old and with 8 seasons of European club competitions behind her, Serb and Montenegrin guard Gordana Grubin seems to be getting better with age and experience.
This season she is averaging 20.4 ppg (1st among all scorers) and 5 rpg in the EuroLeague Women for Italian side Parma, the best statistical output of her career.
Stats of course can be deceiving, but in this week’s EuroLeague Women match-up with Mizo Pecs, Grubin revealed her true value, and picked up MVP of the week honours in the process. Perhaps Grubin was fired up to be playing a former club (she represented Pecs in 1999), but whatever the reason she put on her best performance in what has been so far an outstanding season.
Statistically, Grubin contributed 33 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 steals to her side’s 78:77 win over Pecs. She also kept her side in the game with her scoring when they trailed by 9-points in the 3rd quarter, and went on to hit a 3-pointer with seconds remaining that won the game.
Parma fans are familiar with Grubin’s heroics. This is in fact her 2nd stint with the club after playing in Parma during the 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 seasons. In 2000 Grubin averaged 20.1ppg, 4.5 rpg and 4 apg. She also led her side all the way to the Ronchetti Cup Final, where she recorded 16 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds in Parma’s win over Spanish side Caja Rural.
Since then, Grubin has reached the EuroLeague Women final four in 2002 with Polish side Gydnia. With Parma, a trip to this season’s final four seems out of the question as the club are currently lying in last place in Group B. Nonetheless, the team will look to Grubin for inspiration in their remaining 4 games and if she can continue to carry her team, anything is possible.
