Nemcova Surprised By Czech Call

09.06.2005

Veteran forward Eva Nemcova has expressed her shock after being called up to the Czech Republic national team after a six-year absence.

Nemcova, who has struggled with Achilles and knee injuries, is returning to the fold at the age of 32, after coach Jan Bobrovsky included her in a training camp in Spindleruv Mlyn.

"I was surprised when coach Bobrovsky called me," she told www.basket.idnes.cz.

"I thought that my participation in the Czech national team was closed forever."

Nemcova plays for Parma in Italy, and the forward has slotted back into the Czech squad with ease as she looks to win a place in the first team again.

"We (the squad players) talk normally. I was little bit scared because of that but I feel good in this team. I will be like their mother," she joked.

"I never won anything with the national team. I would like to travel to the European Championships to fight for a medal and a place in the World Championship.

"I did not play basketball after my Achilles operation for seven months so I have a big appetite to come back."

Nemcova also insists that her knee problems are not affecting her at the moment, and she is certainly not thinking about calling time on her career.

"There are no problems (with the knee) right now.

"I trained nearly every day in Parma towards the end of season. The knee does not hurt.

"I signed a contract in Parma for two years and that is important for me. I will see after that."
