How many languages do you speak?
I know French, Italian, English and Russian but none of them very well.
What was the last book you read?
The Da Vinci Code, which is really fashionable right now.
Which newspaper do you read?
Lietuvos rytas
Do you have a web site that you visit every day?
Me, no, but my husband likes to surf. He reads sites about European basketball and lets me know what is going on. I don’t like it too much, I prefer to spend time with my son.
So you don’t like to check your stats?
No.
What is your first basketball memory?
When I was eight my mum asked me to go to basketball and I said no I don’t want to and started to cry. Then I started and I liked it.
So your mum wanted you to go?
Yes, because I was very tall and also shy, so she thought it would be good for me.
Who was your role model growing up?
I never had one. I tried to copy a lot of players, men and women. I don’t like role models because you need to be yourself.
Where is your favourite place to play basketball?
I like Como. We had a very nice team, nice city and nice people around. But now I like to play at home.
And this summer will you go to the USA to play in the WNBA?
No, I want to stay at home and spend more time with my son.
So you will play for the national team?
Yes, I think this summer will be my last with the national team.
What is your best basketball memory?
When we won the European Championship in 1997 in Budapest. Also last year going to the EuroLeague Final Four with my team, my home team. It was always my dream to come back home and win something.
Men’s basketball is hugely popular in Lithuania. What about the women’s game?
Now we have some spectators. I think we have more attention now, much more than in the last few years because we have made it to the final four two years in a row. Men’s basketball is in first place and will always be. We just want some attention for ourselves.
How do you think it is possible for women’s basketball to get more attention?
I have spoken to a lot of people who saw women’s basketball for the first time. They say yes it’s nice because women put heart into the game. We are not physical like the men and can’t dunk but we put our heart and emotions on the court. And they like it because it’s so emotional and so different from the men’s game.
So the trick is to get people to watch it?
Yes for the first time, then they will come back.
You said that this summer may be your last as a player. What are your plans for life after basketball?
I don’t know. First of all I would like a second child. After that I will see.
