Buceta And Buoyant Bulgaria

19 January 2010

Bulgaria coach Jose Maria Buceta admits there is one aim for his team following Saturday's draw for the EuroBasket Women 2011 Division A.

The Bulgarians were drawn in Group C against Hungary and Turkey - two sides that played at last year's EuroBasket in Latvia - and newly-promoted Montenegro and Finland.

"There is one goal," the Spanish coach said.

"We need to play and we have to go to the EuroBasket.

"I need only players who believe that this is their place, in Europe."

Buceta, who is also a sports psychologist and once worked with Real Madrid's football players, knows the mindset has to be right heading into the qualifying games for Bulgaria.

That's why, when asked to comment about the make-up of Group C, he said: "There is no easy group."

"It is Division A. Every team is strong enough.

"We will do our best to go through and to qualify for Poland.

"The group is not important. What's important is our team. We have to be optimistic.

"I know it will be hard, but we have to fight."

What Buceta is keenly aware of is that for Bulgaria to be successful again, the team has to have a good youth program.

That's why he was equally interested in the draws for the other tournaments on Saturday, including the U20 European Championship in which Bulgaria ended up in Group A with the Netherlands, Poland and France.

"We have our chances," he said.

"It will be hard. I suppose we have to fight with the Netherlands, they are a taller team.

"For the under-16 and under-18 teams, we have a big strategy to develop basketball in Bulgaria.

"We are working hard for our program, so we will continue this work. I hope results will come soon."
