Wielebnowska Jumper Gives Wisla OT Win At Nadezhda
// 15 October 2008

The EuroLeague Women tipped off with a dramatic 80-79 overtime win for Wisla Can-Pack Krakow at Nadezhda Orenburg on Wednesday.

Nadezhda, making their debut in the competition, led by three in OT but after Marta Fernandez made two free throws to close the gap to 79-78 with 27 seconds remaining, Anna Wielebnowska drilled a game-winning jump shot for Wisla.

Nadezhda could hardly have endured a more heartbreaking opening game in Europe's elite club competition.

The newcomers from Russia forced overtime when their sensational Belarus center Anastasiya Veremeenko hit a jumper to tie the contest at 71-71 with three seconds remaining.

Veremeenko, who played at the Olympics this summer for Belarus, then swatted a potential game-winning shot by Wisla's Dominique Canty and the game went to the extra period.

Once there, Nadezhda twice in front by three but thanks to the heroics of Fernandez, the 2008 EuroLeague Women All-Star who scored seven of her 19 points in the overtime period, Wisla kept the game close before Wielebnowska clinched victory.

Albena Branzova had a chance to win the game for Orenburg but was off target with four seconds remaining.

Chamique Holdsclaw had 20 points to lead Wisla, while Shameka Christon had a game-high 21 and Veremeenko 20 for the home side.
